It’s safe to say that most of us would like to keep our teeth for as long as possible, and that’s exactly what root canals do – they save teeth that might otherwise be lost. If the idea of having a root canal sounds alarming, you can relax. The fact is that root canals are a very common procedure that is virtually painless. In fact, the situations that result in root canals are often much more painful than the procedure itself. Dr. Jovanovic is pleased to include root canals as one of the many services she offers to her patients from throughout The Woodlands, Conroe, Willis, and Spring, Texas area.
What a Root Canal Can Accomplish
When a patient develops an infection that spreads to the pulp of the tooth, a root canal is the procedure that is often recommended to rid the patient of the infection and save the tooth. The procedure involves Dr. Jovanovic first administering local anaesthetic and dental sedation to the patient. This can come in various forms, depending on the patient’s level of anxiety, but usually it allows the patient to remain awake throughout the procedure but very relaxed and at ease. Once the anaesthetic and sedation take effect, Dr. Jovanovic works to remove the pulp and the nerve of the tooth. Since a tooth doesn’t need either of these to function normally, the tooth can perform exactly the same as the patient’s other healthy teeth after the procedure. Dr. Jovanovic may also affix a crown over the top of the tooth to provide further protection.
