What to Expect at Your Dentist Visit
If we could name the single most important act a patient can take to ensure good oral health, it would be to visit the dentist regularly for exams and cleanings. That’s why Dr. Jovanovic recommends that her patients in The Woodlands, Conroe, Willis, and Spring, Texas area schedule a routine exam and cleaning appointment at least twice a year, though patients with a history of gum disease or a higher cavity risk are sometimes seen more frequently. Dr. Jovanovic, along with her experienced staff of dental hygienists will typically perform the following steps during these visits:
- Professional teeth cleaning – Our trained hygienists use the very latest dental technology to remove the plaque and tartar buildups that accumulate between visits. No matter how diligent you may be about brushing and flossing, you’ll never be able to remove this buildup on your own, which is why periodic professional cleaning is such a vital part of a good oral health care plan.
- Gum health assessment – Some patients may need to have their gum health assessed during their oral exam and cleaning visit. Whenever necessary, our hygienists will use a tool to measure the depth of gum pockets that form around the patient’s teeth. This is an indication of whether the patient has healthy gum tissue, or whether extra steps are needed to avoid the formation of gum disease.
- Oral exam – Dr. Jovanovic will typically perform an oral exam of each patient during these routine visits. She’ll do this to look for any obvious signs of tooth decay or gum disease, but also to look for early indications of oral cancer, which can often develop with few or no symptoms. You may also need to have an X-ray taken during your visit. We are pleased to offer our patients 3D digital CBCT X-rays, which not only produce much less radiation than traditional X-rays; they also allow Dr. Jovanovic to view the results immediately on her computer screen.
When it comes to maintaining good oral health, nothing is more important than performing a regular oral hygiene routine at home each day, and visiting our office at least twice a year for professional exams and cleanings.
