Dental consultation for closing a gap between teeth without braces

If you have a gap between your teeth that you would like to close, braces may not be the only option. Depending on what is causing the space and how much your teeth need to move, you may be able to change your smile with bonding, veneers, or clear aligners instead.

The right choice is not always about finding the fastest way to close the space. A small gap caused by the shape of your teeth may call for a very different approach than one related to tooth position or spacing along the jaw. At Montgomery Park Dental, Dr. Carolyn Jovanovic draws on more than a decade of experience in general and cosmetic dentistry to first assess those differences, helping determine which option makes the most sense for your smile.

You Can Close a Tooth Gap Without Traditional Braces

A gap, or diastema, can form for several reasons, including genetics, a piece of tissue between your front teeth, a missing tooth nearby, or even a habit like tongue thrusting during childhood. Some gaps stay the same size for years, while others slowly widen as you age, which is why it helps to have your smile evaluated before choosing a treatment. Depending on the size and cause of your gap, you may be able to close it with a cosmetic option instead of moving your teeth with brackets and wires.

We typically recommend one of three treatments for a gap between the teeth, depending on its size, the shape of your smile, and how much movement your teeth actually need.

  • Dental bonding: a tooth colored resin fills in the space during a single appointment.
  • Porcelain veneers: thin shells cover the front of your teeth and can widen them slightly to close a larger gap.
  • Clear aligners: a series of custom trays gradually move your teeth closer together over several months.

Each of these treatments can close a gap without the brackets and wires used in traditional orthodontics, and we can help you weigh the trade-offs of each during your visit.

Dental Bonding Closes a Small Gap in a Single Visit

Dental bonding is often the fastest way to close a small gap between your teeth. During your visit, we apply a tooth colored composite resin to the edges of the teeth on either side of the gap, then shape and polish it until it blends with the rest of your smile.

This treatment usually takes less than an hour, and no numbing is needed unless the tooth also has a cavity. Bonding works well for gaps only a few millimeters wide and holds up for several years with normal care, making it a straightforward fit for smaller gaps.

Porcelain Veneers Work Best for Wider Gaps

If your gap is wider or your teeth are naturally small, bonding alone may not create the look you want. Porcelain veneers cover the entire front surface of your teeth, so we can adjust their width, shape, and shade while we close a larger gap in the process.

Veneers also resist staining better than bonding material, so they tend to hold their color over the years, and many patients pair them with teeth whitening beforehand for an even brighter result. The porcelain veneers process typically takes two visits from start to finish, giving you time to see the design before it is finalized.

Clear Aligners Shift Your Teeth Together Over Time

When a gap is due to extra space along the jaw rather than the size of your teeth, covering it with bonding or veneers may not hold up over time. A 2022 review of diastema treatment options found that closing a gap without braces is possible for many patients through composite or aligner-based approaches, depending on the width and location of the space.

Clear aligners gently shift your teeth into a new position over months, so the space closes for good rather than being covered up. We offer clear aligners for patients whose gaps require gradual movement rather than a cosmetic cover, and most people can wear them at work, at school, or during everyday activities without anyone noticing.

Choose Montgomery Park Dental to Perfect Your Smile

You do not have to know whether bonding, veneers, or clear aligners are right for you before coming in. That decision starts with understanding why the gap is there, how much space needs to be closed, and what you would like to change about your smile. Dr. Carolyn Jovanovic can walk you through those options and explain what each would mean for your teeth.
